A family from the Dominican Republic -
1st email - "Thanks very much for such an excellent work! I just saw the entire movie with all the family! They're very happy! The music you chose is just for each moment, very accurate. Thanks again Ted and expect news from me!"    They bought data DVD copies of the produced movie and needed help to burn new copies. We helped immediately.

2nd email -  "Hi Ted, the family is very happy with the work you've done. Let me tell you that the duplication was made without any trouble. I'm sending more films..."

We have been working professionally transferring 8mm film since 2002. We have been featured at one of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce breakfasts and in the Lewiston Sun Journal's famous "Sun Spots" page. We transfer Super 8 and Regular 8 using a frame by frame method that produces VERY high quality results with our pro equipment. This includes a High Definition CMOS sensor in a 1080i HD digital video camera by Sony, a mint frame by frame transfer projector and a great deal of experience. We use professional BORIS FX color correction standard on all our film. You can opt for FREE pro soundtrack music by www.musicbakery.com or include your own music. Free on screen text as well. If your movies have sound, it will be filtered through a BBE sonic maximizer.

At just $0.10 per foot for an 8mm film transfer, it is a great deal. Let us make a professional produced playable DVD and send an INTERNAL or an EXTERNAL harddrive and get the AVI clips free. See our TUTORIAL on HOW TO TRANSFER 8MM FILM at home, and the ins and outs of DIGITAL VIDEO.   What's the difference between a playable DVD and a DV master set? A playable DVD is a produced DVD that is designed exclusively for DVD players and TV's. A DV master is available and allows you to store a copy that streams 3 times higher than that of modern DVD players, and allows printable pictures to be pulled from the frames! The digital heirarchy is as follows:

  1. Digital Video uncompressed streams at 30MB/second, invented in the late 1970's

  2. "Digital Video Type I", alias files with extension "xxx.AVI" stream at 3MB/sec, this is what all video editors work in, including network TV and sports

  3. MPEG II is the standard "DVD" file used in playable movies. It streams at approx 1 MB/sec

The lower the bit rate, the lower the quality. The DV master produced by digital video camcorders is DV Type I, or 3 times the data present in a DVD. We use this for DV Masters.

SIZES: 3"reel=50ft, 5"reel=200ft, 6"reel=300ft, 7"reel=400ft TIME: 400ft of film is approx 23-28 minutes long.

" A Time of Film Decay"
"Motion Pictures of all types are deteriorating faster than archives can preserve them, according to a Comprehensive Study released today by the Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington."

The National Film Preservation Board - June 1993

Tooth decay will rot your teeth, so they say. Film decay will rob you of your family treasures as well. Every year as we progress through the summer, back into fall, video tapes and film strips go through a punishing environment in which humidity fluctuations saturate the colors on the "negatives". This effect with the winter phase of becoming very very dry causes slight damage EVERY YEAR they exist to the Focus, Color, Edge sharpness and contrast. Most of these elements can be corrected to a high level using todays professional video software. Consumer grade equipment simply trades one set of grainy images for a second using a slightly different hue.

Treasure for grandchildren
These films family and nationwide tend to be literal family treasure chests of history and information. Footage of yourself as a child, the old house, the old stomping grounds, what a real car looked like the 1950's, not a movie car. Footage of your parents, and your childrens grandparents and GREAT grandparents. Now really is the time to do a transfer. You would receive either a MiniDV tape with the large number of GB of data, or 15-20 DATA DVD's with the AVI DV Type I files on them. This allows for a literal archive of the images exactly as they are today. Most Opt to simply keep a copy of the DVD movie as we archive disc image files of the final movie forever, with perfect clones available.

Cleaning film
There is no other topic on the web with more misinformation than that of 8mm film cleaning. We use chamois cloth with professional film cleaner called ECCO VSF299. Some use cotton, we do not for the sole reason it is one of the most abrasive materials you can use. Real chamois is used for commercial purposes as well as consumer for things like polishing sensitive surfaces. As far as "lubricating" the film goes, if a company charges less than $0.05/foot extra to do this beware. The process if done right takes at least 2 hours per 400ft reel or more. What we have found is that we can indirectly lubricate the film by spraying film lube onto the pojector path before every reel is run through. This has shown to be a very, very effective solution as well as being as gentle on the film as you can be. Try some google searches, but beware that many copy and paste text, then modify the words some to make it look original without even knowing anything about the topic.

How can we clean film free then?
We prove our method by the result. We have spent months tinkering with a device that is introduced before the workprinter. It gently wipes loose dust and debris off the film, then a second section applies tiny amounts of commercial film cleaner and is swabbed off using chamois. As the film passes through the workprinter for the transfer, the film dries. It takes 10-20 seconds to dry and the pass through the workprinter is more than 30 seconds. So with out invention, manual tasking in eliminated. It is important to remember some debris you see is actually damage with the film itself. Either way, this is now added as a free portion to our base rate.
